Superheroes and princesses are making a difference in children’s lives around Bellevue.

“We’re not putting the Halloween costumes away. We’re using them to help kids,” said Heroes for Heroes Inc. founder Andrew Byrne.

“It’s a way for us to give back to the community on a regular basis.”

Heroes for Heroes Inc. is a volunteer program that helps bring happiness to children battling adversity. Military members dress up as superheroes and princesses from movies and television shows and visit children around the community.

The idea came from Byrne’s friend who volunteered in a similar group in Cincinnati. After hearing about the group, Byrne wanted to bring it to Bellevue.

“We’ve gotten tremendous support from the community,” he said. “The kids and adults love it and it has been very overwhelming.”

The children facing adversity could be sick, sad or just need happiness in their life. If only for a moment, Heroes for Heroes Inc. makes that happen for them.

“For two hours a month, we just let them be kids,” Byrne said. “We leave the real world at the door and bring the imaginary world to them.”

Byrne is a Senior Airman and has been active in the Air Force for more than two years. He is stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue.

The group is in need of more volunteers. Byrne said so far they have 12 volunteers but would like to double that if possible so they can attend more events in the area.

“We want as many people as possible,” he said. “We focus on a younger crowd but anyone can be involved.”

All superheroes and princesses are military volunteers from Offutt Air Force Base. It’s a way for the military members and their spouses to give back to the community they serve.

“This is for anyone from the base that wants to get involved in the community,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity for everyone.”

Byrne said he couldn’t be happier with the program and is making a difference in the community.

“It feels good knowing I’m giving people an outlet to do this,” he said. “The people of Bellevue have welcomed us with open arms and we have made an impact on this great community.”

All active military members and their spouses can volunteer. To volunteer for the group, email Andrew Byrne at andybh4h@gmail.com.
