Who would have thought that a sentient dessert and a UK rock band could come together to make one of the biggest hits of 2018? Marshmello and Bastille‘s “Happier” peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in mid-November. It’s been covered by Keith Urban, performed on live television, given an acoustic rendition, and all done up with two music videos. It’s the song that keeps on giving, and it gives even more in the way of inspiration to other producers.
Of course Marshmello’s friends had to give his biggest hit to date some fun makeovers. “Happier” is a dance-rock-pop hybrid, but this list of remixes below turns it into some old-school dubstep, high-energy house pop, tropical house and more. Which one is your favorite?
Marshmello & Bastille – “Happier” (Jauz Remix)
Don’t be fooled by the slowed-down vocal. Jauz’s “Happier” remix packs drum and bass lines deep and dark enough to make the hair on OG dubstep crews’ arms stand on end. Bastille singer Dan Smith’s voice is layered to haunting effect, bringing even more depth to its heartfelt lyrics.
Marshmello & Bastille – “Happier” (Breathe Carolina Remix)
Breathe Carolina switches the mood with an uptempo take that’s pure house-pop sunset. Smith’s voice is fed trough a dark filter while guitar licks add a cool brightness to the remixed hook. This version of “Happier” will keep you moving through good times and bad, which is what “Happier” is all about.
Marshmello & Bastille – “Happier” (Frank Walker Remix)
Walker focuses on the hit’s signature horns and hones his synths on recreating their bouncy sound. There’s a tropical vibe to its feel-good hook. It’s a remix fit for a poolside party for a breezy day at the beach, and there’s a touch of ’80s influence in its echoing drums.
Marshmello & Bastille – “Happier” (Matt Medved Remix)
Billboard Dance founder Matt Medved tries his hand at the gooey one’s big hit. His cool house remix speeds up the vocal and lays it over a punchy rhythm. Some orchestral strings add graceful notes to a version that works for early hours on the dance floor or hanging with friends.
Marshmello & Bastille – “Happier” (BEAUZ Remix)
American DJ duo BEAUZ pack a lot of punch into this future bass take. The tempo is close to the original, but the electronic textures are amplified to turn the dance-pop favorite into a tune big enough for the club but still perfect listening for hanging around.
